The House Without a Christmas Tree - Christmas Movie Review

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION :

Clear Water, Nebraska in 1946 is the setting for this story of a ten-year old girl, Addie Mills (played by Lisa Lucas) who has only one wish - to have a Christmas tree in their home for the Holidays.

Her father, James (Jason Robards) is still distraught over the death of his wife soon after Addie's birth, and refuses. He somehow blames Addie for his beloved wife's death.

Living in their home, to help raise Addie, is her paternal grandmother (Mildred Natwick) who tells Addie why her father just can't bear to celebrate Christmas.

When Addie "wins" a Christmas tree at school, her father is enraged. The grandmother tries to fix the problem and explains to her son that Addie needs more than just a home and food, she needs his love. Eventually, they begin to communicate and the situation gets sorted out.

* This story always moves me to tears
* I became a better person after watching this film

* Great Christmas gift
* Waited twenty-seven years to see this film again
* Shows what the Christmas spirit really is

Cons :

* Older production (1972) on videotape which takes away a bit of the magic
* Wish it was still shown on TV
* You'd never see a father smoking in a family movie now
* Filmed in a studio format, so it seems like a play (or a soap opera)
* It's sad they don't show this film during the holidays

CONCLUSION :

This is definitely a movie to add to your Christmas Movie collection, along with the 2 sequels. You could even buy all four books authored by Gail Rock, which are autobiographical. People mainly complained that this movie, which was shown each season during the 70s, is no longer shown during the Holiday season. Anyone who sees the movie can't seem to forget about it.
